Dally would love Cherry, but, again, not enough to change who he is for her. He will always be a Greaser, no matter what. If Cherry and Dally dated prior to events such as the death of Johnny, I imagine that when Johnny would die, Dally wouldn’t immediately run off. Cherry would calm him down, and he wouldn’t have stolen that night or died. However, Dally would still meet a Greaser’s end. Perhaps it would be Johnny’s death that would send him into a downwards spiral, resulting in the same old thug death that other Greasers have grown used to. He would die, perhaps just as he did in the original book. This, of course, would break Cherry, but, just as she did in the book, she would carry on after her boyfriend’s death. She would have to pretend to agree with strangers who pick up the newspaper for the day after and complain about how Greasers do this to themselves, and that all of them are bad and deserve deaths like Dally’s. She would silently defend Dally when he would be brought up in Soc conversations, just as I imagine she did when Bob came up in Greaser conversations. She would find herself comparing Dally and Bob, asking herself if they really were that different or if they weren’t alike at
