The Great Gatsby And Lieutenant Cross Analysis

In the two novels, The Great Gatsby and The Things They Carried, Jay Gatsby and Lieutenant Cross share a common obsession with the past. Both men embellish and spend a great amount of time trying to recreate the past. Gatsby’s unrelenting love for Daisy consumes his every thought, while Lieutenant Cross’ daydreaming about his sweetheart lead to his men’s demise in the jungles of Vietnam. While reflecting on the past can be productive, to dwell upon it or try to recreate it is detrimental to personal progress. Gatsby and Lieutenant Cross both exhibit a fixation on the past which inhibits their ability to live fully in the present.

Although their romance never really took flight, Lieutenant Cross was fully enveloped with his college love, Martha. He would often reminisce on their first and only date while he was in Vietnam, to the point of excluding his military duties. “Remember[ing] touching that left knee… He would always remember the feel of the tweed skirt and the knee beneath it” (4). In the heat of war, Lieutenant Cross recollects the nonviable dream of his love with Martha back home. It is the mystery of his “she loves me, she loves me not”, the very uncertainty of their relationship, that ushers him through the war and ultimately back home to find out the truth. At his class reunion after the war, Lieutenant Cross, “Took [Martha’s] hand, there was no pressure in return, and later still, when he told her he still loved her, she kept walking and didn’t answer” (28). After carrying photos of his one true love through the war in the hopes that he would be requited with Martha, Lieutenant Cross’s fantasy came up short. Martha’s feelings about him had not changed since their awkward encounter at the movies, although he liked to imagine they had while at war. His pursuit of Martha’s love had gotten him through one of the most difficult times in his life, but ultimately the feelings were not mutual and he was let down. Once again, lofty expectations of a relationship ultimately left love’s pursuer

Just from these lines, the reader can sense the fatigue Lieutenant Cross is feeling as well as get a good picture of his loneliness and desire to be close to another, which is apparent in the way he “held them [the letters] with the tips of his fingers”, a move that shows delicacy and a will to not ruin something so precious. Also, the line “spend the last hour of light pretending” is one of great significance because it gives insight as to how the soldiers felt to be in the war. The word “pretending” is an excellent word choice because it paints the picture here that Lieutenant Cross uses the letters from Martha as an escape from the war- a way to imagine what life would be like if he had not been sent to Vietnam. In the chapter “How to Tell a True War Story” O’Brien explains that his friend Rat Kiley wrote a long, very heartfelt letter to the sister of a fallen soldier that happened to be a close friend of…

He had loved Martha more than his men, and as a consequence Lavender was now dead, and this was something that he would have to carry like a stone in his stomach for the rest of the war”, (16). This passage was an example of the theme because Cross was caring, but after Lavender was killed he decided that he needed to be more…

Elroy portrays the person that manages to get the hero back on his feet after a tragic occurrence takes something that he loves. Finally, Lieutenant Cross is the hero’s friend who can sympathize with the hero (in this case, Cross understands what not being with one’s love is like). In fact, it is crucial that the novel be interpreted as a love story rather than a love story. War stories give the reader a reading experience centered on the brutality and effects of the war on its soldiers, while love stories focus more on the interesting and unique relationships between a protagonist and somebody…

Right off the bat we are introduced to this problem as the author begins to describing Mr. Cross’s emotions and fantasies of the girl Martha. This fantasy and lack of focus quickly becomes the antagonist of the story as it results in one of his man, Ted Lavender, being shot and kill during one of their missions. As the story progresses we see the protagonist develop a guilt over the death of his soldier and as we come to the conclusion of the story, we get a protagonist who has completely changed his perspective. Stepping fulling into his roll as a lieutenant, we get a passage describing how he gets rid of everything that reminds him of Martha as he realizes that his obligation is not to be loved but to lead. This again brings us back to the main idea being that personal burdens are the heaviest things this men carry.…

In The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald uses the characters Jay Gatsby and Daisy Buchanan to demonstrate that clinging to the past excessively can inhibit a person’s future experiences, which he portrays through their relationships and daily lives. Prior to the events of the book, Gatsby was romantically involved with Daisy during World War I. However, Daisy grew tired of waiting on Gatsby, and her love was bought by Thomas Buchanan instead. The Great Gatsby takes place roughly five years after the war, as the protagonist, Nick Carraway, reminisces on Gatsby’s attempts to win Daisy back.…

The past and the present can often be at a constant struggle within individuals and lead to moral confusion and conflict with each other. As the past teaches one thing and the present another, the concept of right or wrong is broken and the idea that both must be embraced is not realized. The novel, The Great Gatsby, by F.Scott Fitzgerald, utilizes numerous elements and literary devices to portray many different themes and topics. Using these, he portrays the struggle between the past and the present. Specifically, Fitzgerald utilizes foreshadow to show us that certain events or conversations hold deeper meaning, relating a future event to a characters past and their struggle through their decisions.…

Similarly to the young soldier who carried Billie’s picture, Lieutenant Jimmy Cross used to carry letters and pictures of a girl from back home named Martha. Both the young soldier and Cross felt like they killed their comrades because of their focus on these women, but while the young soldier continues to obsess over the picture, Cross finds composure in abandoning his love. At first, he carried letters from Martha that “weighed 4 ounces” and “humped his love for Martha up the hills and through the swamps” (2, 3). Cross carried the letters even though they added weight, which the specific detail illustrates, to what he carried. He was so in love with Martha that we was willing to commit and carry her letters through difficult terrain.…

Lieutenant Cross demonstrates that Martha is his mental escape when “he [wonders] what her truest feelings [are], exactly, and what she [means] by separate-but-together” (O’Brien 8). Additionally, Martha, Mary Anne, and Kathleen are very young and not fully experienced in life, as they are immature. The men, however, are at war and it forces them to mature rapidly; therefore, they cannot relate to the women as they have a characteristic that the men are not able to fully understand. Lieutenant Cross describes his beloved Martha’s…

After his perfect vision of Daisy finally told Tom that she never loved him, Gatsby let his emotions get the best of him and entered a fit of rage while displaying a rather undesirable side of himself that he has tried very hard to cover up. By doing this, he essentially rejected the disposition he had spent his whole life creating and destroys any chance he had of creating a life with Daisy. In “Rebirth and Renewal”, Steinbrink’s literary criticism of The Great Gatsby, he mentioned that “life is subject to continual renewal”, something Jay Gatsby does not acknowledge. By not accepting this…
