First, Augustine’s view will be analyzed. In the City of God lust and sexual pleasure is portrayed to be sinful. Early in the text it is stated that if “anyone looks at a woman with the eyes of lust, he already committed adultery with his heart.’ (Augustine 3). This means that the thought of a person determines their righteousness even if no wrong action was made. “Pleasure, on the other hand, is preceded by a kind of craving which is felt in the body as its own desire – hunger, for instance, and thirst, and the feeling normally called lust, when it is concerned with the sexual organs” (Augustine 7). Sexual pleasure is unholy in the eyes of Augustine and it does not occur the ultimately reality where there is now original sin. The perfect man in Augustine’s opinion “possess[es] his bodily instrument in holiness and honour, not in the sickness of desire, like the Gentiles who have no knowledge of God – surely such a man would prefer, if possible, to beget children without lust of this kind” (Augustine 8). Augustine has a harsh opinion of sexual pleasure and believes that a perfect man would prefer to have children without the sexual pleasure. To recap, the ultimate reality of the Koran is an afterlife that is achieved through submission of oneself to the superior being God. While in Augustine’s City of God the ultimate reality is not an achievable reality but an impossible state of existence without sin. Each text’s version of the ultimate reality lays out different guidelines on the role of a relationship between a man and a woman. In the Koran the ideal relationship is achieved through following the one’s duty as husband and a wife. While in the City of God it has already been tainted by the sins of Adam and Eve. However, the relationship in the ultimate reality before the original sin was peaceful and without sexual cravings. The intended purpose of sex was only procreation.
