“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”(US Const. amend. II) The meaning of this amendment to the United States Constitution has been heavily debated topic for decades. For me, the meaning of the Second Amendment was never controversial because I grew up in a household where my family held in high regard the rights granted to us by the United States Constitution and Bill of Rights. However, I never personally examined the meaning of each clause. It was not until recently that I began to learn about opposing views that exist among American citizens. It appears to me that the Second Amendment gives rise to more disagreement among American citizens compared to almost any other constitutional right.
There are several examples of issues behind the debate related to the Second Amendment. From the 1980’s to modern day, various firearm bans have been imposed on American citizens. These firearm bans themselves have caused great outrage among those who believe in their right to bear arms regardless of what that arm is. Open and concealed carry laws have also given rise to great controversy. Recently, the debate has become more heated as one side claims weapons, specifically firearms, are needed for protection and should less regulated by the government, while the other side claims that firearms cause more harm than good and should be heavily regulated or banned by the…
