The Second Amendment of the United States Constitution was created as a part of the Bill of Rights in 1791. This Amendment protects the right of the people to keep and bear arms, but different interpretations of this amendment have encouraged a long-running debate over the rights of individual citizens to buy, own and carry firearms and gun control legislation. Prior to the framing of this amendment the word “militia” referred to assemblies of able bodied men who organized in order to watch over their communities, colonies and eventually states, once the United States gained its independence from Great Britain in 1776.
