The anti-bullying movement is one that everyone is interested in ending. School factors such as gender have a major influence on the extent to which students are bullied. On most occasions, those who students who attend the coeducational schools are bullied because they do not conform to the social standards presented by their peers. Boston University Law Review says, “They begin with the premise that gender stereotyping can be terribly dangerous to the wellbeing and sense of belonging of large swaths of children who do not conform perfectly to normative boy or girl behavior.”(Salamone) Children in coeducational schools are likely bullied based upon factors concerning gender nonconformity. Gender conformity is the behavior that is expected due to the social expectations of ones gender. For example, for gender conforming men, they are expected to behave and appear in ways that are masculine. Male and female students are more comfortable with learning in the same environment of the same sex. The opposite sex is able to learn more in subjects that are considered to be a hindrance to them in single sex environments. OO Cities proves this point to be correct when the article reads, “Research suggests girls flourish in subjects such as math and science particularly if they are in a single gender environment. Boys could explore their interests in drama, biology and languages without losing face with girls.” (Oocities) Female students are more likely to participate in a classroom discussion involving math and science if in a single sex class. A females academic engagement and achievements are hindered with the presence of a male in the class room. In comparison, male students are going to feel less comfortable discussing poetry and literature in a room full of the opposite sex.
