To retain information and keep it in my memory, I need to be an active learner. During this class I learned that there are nine main characteristics of an active learner, which are: reading with the purpose of understanding and remembering, reflecting on the information and thinking critically, listen actively by taking notes in an organized fashion, note that learning involves more than just simply putting in time, getting assistance when I experience problems, accepting responsibility for my learning, question the information, understand the role that memorization plays in learning, and understanding that college is a choice. Once I learned of these characteristics of an active learner is able to apply them in my classes, and I became a more active learner and in return, I have done better in my classes. I learned that the memory has three main parts to it. The three parts are the sensory store, the short-term memory and the long-term memory. The sensory store is a kind of a filter, which filters out information that I will not be able to remember. My short-term memory “is the part where information is held for a brief time--- less than 30 seconds, unless you do something to retain.” STM (short-term memory) will only hold a small portion of information, usually from 5 to 9 pieces of information. My long-term memory or LTM, will never fill up. It has unlimited capacity to remember information. In the field that I will be going into, I need to have a good memory because I am going to need to remember many, many different types of plants and characteristics of them. I use my memory in everyday college life, but now I know exactly where this information goes in my brain. I think it is important to learn this information, so we know how our brain works and so we can learn and remember the most amount of information
