The manager must act on what Kouzes and Posner (2012) calls the two essentials to act on which are common ideas and vision. The office personnel has a product that they must produce on a daily basis. As the manager interacts with the personnel they must develop a platform to draw information out of the personnel. The culture that is developed over time will help do this. A culture that is built on trust and confidence will develop a work atmosphere that is productive. The effort that is put into these to topics will assist the manager in their ability to lead. Everyone has the basic requirements for being professional otherwise, they would not have been able to join but there is more to professionalism than just using the word. It is the way they act, talk and look in front of others, especially those outside of the service. Being professional will help and individual a great deal. Whether they remain in the military or get out professionalism is needed in all organizations. If they decide to remain in the military that professionalism will help them gain the trust and confidence from their leaders and allow them to go to more schools and higher levels of responsibility. This should be a priority for leadership and everyone that sees an act that needs to be recognized. According to Reese (2014), it is words that keep employees focused on the mission. Recognition should have a set standard and should not be delivered at a certain time. If a person does the requirement for that award then they should get that award within a short time period. Many times a member will get an award that covers a long period of time. If the presentation of the award takes a long time the meaningfulness of it may fade. For the military promotion process an award that covers a specific action looks better than an award that covers a three or four-year tour. It is a custom that a normal hard working person will get an award upon the completion of a tour of duty.
The challenge is hard because a member should not ask for an award for doing something. According to Reese (2014) actions may need more than words. Many leaders will say that a member should not get an award for doing their job. Recognition does not always have to be awards they can be a parking spot, early days or even a good job. Those types of recognition are great and should lead to more appropriate awards but the leader needs to do whatever they can to document and then deliver an award for the right reason at the right
