The Importance Of NYLCA Honor

Decent Essays
One honor that stuck out to me was how I was selected by my peers to take on a leadership role. I greatly appreciated this, since I am loyal and passionate about music. This shows that not only my friends, but also others had trusted in me to be the leader. Because of this, I have had much experience with leadership, especially in the band. For example, I am now the woodwind captain and is “in charge” of about 50 musicians ranging from 9th grade to 12th grade,
Leadership like this and many other circumstances have resulted in the plethora of another type of honor that is important to me; the various selections and nomination of conferences I have received. To be more specific, I am personally proud of the NYLCA nomination and selection.

During my senior year of high school, I was the National Honor Society Treasurer. When I ran for this position, I was oblivious to responsibility, time, and effort I was bound to confront, however, when my term was up, I realized that I went in as just an officer and left as a leader. As treasurer, I was responsible for going beyond the minimal fifty hours of community service—as well as verifying the time other members completed.…

However, that award would not have been possible without my team and co-captain. Together we had to work to fundraise over $1,000 each year we participated. That took coordination and communication. Especially since all of money was raised through events we held and not through donations. Me, my co-captain, and my teammates all had to work together to make that happen.…

My most significant leadership experience would be when I was in the Girls Varsity Tennis Team. I had been in the tennis team during my highschool years, for 2 years. During that time I learned a lot about being a leader, such as what it means to lead others, and what qualities a leader should have. When I first started playing tennis I started at the position on 2nd doubles, to me I took it as that I was not good enough to play against an opponent by myself on the court. Which was entirely true, because when I began playing I was not any good whatsoever.…

Successful organizations all require 2 things: a strong team and strong leaders to direct the team to victory, and the Marching Pioneers is no exception to this rule. With an ensemble as large as the Marching Pioneers, there is no physically possible way 4 top tier leaders can give everyone the attention they need. Section leaders are necessary for the success of our fine organization, and there’s nothing more satisfying than being part of a leadership team that can add to the already growing success of this talented group. Here are just a few reasons why I would like to be in the next generation of saxophone section leaders. To be a section leader is like being given a lump of clay and being told to mold into the Statue of David.…

My heart is beating quickly, my mouth is dry, and as I look at the familiar faces in front of me, their judging eyes make them seem like strangers. I struggle to get them to quiet down and we begin our hour long sectional, which I have to lead. It was the first day of my third year in marching band and at the end of last year, with the graduation of the previous section leader, I was granted his important position. Being a competitive person, I was extremely self conscience of how my section made me look. I hated being blamed for their errors and was exceedingly harsh towards them during sectionals.…

As honors students, we thrive on achievements. Tangible achievements are what, for many of us, ensure that we have accomplished our goals. For this reason, when I learned about the “Honor Cadet of the Flight” award at Civil Air Patrol Encampment, I was determined to achieve it. I tried extremely hard and made sure that everything I did displayed nothing less than excellence throughout the week. Because I was so determined to achieve that award, the setback came across disconcerted me greatly.…

Not only do all members of National Honor Society practice healthy academic careers, share a commitment to servicing our community, and demonstrate effective leadership, they also showcase exemplary characters that are observed by their advisors and peers. Despite contrary belief, character is not only defined by who you are when no one is watching; it is who you are at all times. You present your character when you are when you are alone in a room, in a busy crowd, with your teammates on the field, and sitting down at dinner with your family. It is a measure of your person that is determined by both the appearances and meanings behind your thoughts, words, and actions.…

Some of the most memorable were volunteering at the local 6th grade day camp for the last four years. Essentially, I was given a group of up to twelve 6th graders, who I would help guide through team bonding activities. It was rewarding to be a part of their social growth as they begin their journey to middle school, while experiencing the outdoors with some students for the very first time. As memorable as that time was for me, I am excited to next share my single greatest leadership achievement, the Ignition Program at Waukesha West High School. Having earned a position as a member of the board my sophomore and junior years, I decided it was a program that meant a lot to me and was elected Co-president this year.…

Growing up as the youngest of five children I learned that participating in community service and leadership activities was one of the best ways to have a hand in the organization and inner workings of the community. Throughout my education I participated in numerous volunteer and leadership activities including Envirothon, Key Club and Yearbook. In the future, I plan to participate in multiple clubs including the ECO C.A.T.S and Circle K. My personal goal is to pursue a career in medicine, focusing on nursing, and I hope to eventually complete a master’s program in order to become a midwife. It is my belief that volunteering in the local and extended communities is one of the best ways to honor them.…
