This culture must stem from management. Strategies must be set by management to create and foster a community of employees that accept and embrace diversity in the workplace. Management should periodically access diversity in the workplace. Diversity must be a constant objective. Employee surveys can be extremely helpful in this circumstance to evaluate the culture of the company. However, diversity is not just a managerial goal. Every employee must be actively involved in diversifying a workforce. Encouraging employees to express their ideas and opinions openly, along with diversity workshops can help this process tremendously. Though diversity workshops are not as effective as they could be, mentoring programs have also recently been applauded for success in changing workplace culture. Unlike workshops, mentoring programs are volunteer based. Volunteer based programs and trainings take away the defensive reaction to change. Based on research by the University of Toronto, people are more likely to be open to diversity initiatives and admit to prejudices if they feel like it was their choice. Forcing employees to change workplace culture often leads to resentment and anger.
