While he is terrible and unsympathetic towards his subjects, he is just, and not an evil god, as he only punishes who deserved to be. His wife is Persephone, whom he abducted from Earth. When an author alludes to Hades, they are portraying a character who is usually reclusive and ill-natured. He or she is not evil, but very selfish and indifferent to other people’s feelings and needs. Although he may be terrible, he or she is not unfair, and will act unforgivingly to those who have committed crimes.…

Not only that, but the theme of healing is less about righteous justice against an uncaring spouse, and more of a loving mother who wants her daughter back, or “mourning as a tool for healing” as Madeline Nold puts it (Nold 171). In this story it’s Demeter’s refusal to keep the Earth’s balance that forces Hades to return Persephone: the world literally can’t be returned to normal until things are set right in the spiritual realm. The fact that there are two goddesses in this story, who can be read as the delicate and feminine versus strong, maternal and earthy aspects of Inanna, compound these comparisons. In short, the shamanistic connection between…

In Hymn to Demeter, Demeter puts up a fight to against numerous gods, she even directly rejects the order of Zeus. After what she heard from Helios, the only god who watches over both gods and mortals, she “avoided the assembly of gods and lofty Olympus” (Hymn to Demeter, 92). One might argue that she does more avoiding than defying the gods’ will. However, she puts up a tremendous fight with the gods in Olympus at the end of Hymn to Demeter. Towards the end of the poem, she causes a disaster among both human and gods.…

To be associated with her a drastic change in environment is usually what occurs. Persephone was tricked and taken to the awful depths of the underworld by Hades. An example of this occurrence is present in Wuthering Heights, where Catherine is lured into obtaining a life with Edgar with promises of higher status and greater wealth, but what she finds at Thrushcross Grange is misery in herself and others around her. There are allusions to her outside the world of literature and in daily life as well, since she is associated with nature a soil fertilizer is named after her, Demeter Fertilizer.…

The meaning and application of popular sovereignty has drastically changed due to many changed made to the constitution and many new laws put in place. In the beginning of the United State’s government, there were very few people that had a say in the government and could vote on changes to the government. Before many of the current amendments and laws were put into place, only old, white men that were property owners had an influence on the government. Popular sovereignty was very limited to a small amount of people in the United States, that often did not represent the majority of the country.…

Before taking this course, I had an interest in most of the gods and goddesses, especially Athena. I thought she was this very intricate character able to be the command in the strategy of war as compared to the violence that the god, Ares, incited through war. She was a strong goddess who remained an essential factor in the different myths of Greece, such as the beginnings of Athens. Particularly now, I find Hades as my favorite because he was a god who for the most part, he left the mortal world alone. He remained in the underworld, only ever really dealing with heroes when they came into his domain, such as when Theseus and Pirithous went to the underworld to take Persephone and when Hercules entered the underworld for Cerberus.…

In the information given by Apollodorus, he refers to Demeter as Demeter, whereas Ovid refers to her as Ceres. Ovid says “Ceres first turned the earth with the curved plough; she first gave corn and crops to bless the land; she first gave laws; all things are Ceres’ gift” (Ovid, 109). In Ovid’s account of the Rape of Persephone, he adds information about Cupid, Hades, Persephone, and introduces a nymph named Cyane. However, although he does add information he also subtracts information given in Apollodorus’ Library. In Apollodorus’ Library Demeter learns from the people of Hermion that Persephone has been kidnapped.…

Hades is often described as a hard, middle-aged man, living in the dark, among the shadows of the Dead. Edward can be seen as resembling Hades as they are both living in the dark and hard until they meet a girl that softens them up much like Bella or Persephone.
