How do explain things that you don’t understand? Greek myths seemed so logical to the early man that they did not stir up disbelief, thus, believing that they held the answers to the world’s questions. As men’s curiosity grew, they thought of creation myths creating the answers they looked for. Things that were unexplainable suddenly made sense with these myths that involved gods, goddesses, and mythological creatures. Greek myths explain the origins of natural phenomenons and why they happen. “Demeter did not refuse, poor comfort through it was that she must lose Persephone for four months every year and see her young loveliness go down to the world of the dead,” (Hamilton 60). What happens in the myth explains why winter lasts for four months and how spring follows up. The Greek Goddess of agriculture, Demeter is associated with the seasons. Her daughter, Persephone was kidnapped by the Greek God, Hades and took her to the underworld. Demeter was devastated and soon enough, all the crops were dying and she did not take care of them for she was too sad. Zeus sent Hermes to persuade Hades to let go of Persephone, he agreed but made her eat pomegranate seeds for it assure her return for four months. “At Hermes’ words she sprang up joyfully, eager to go...And he made her eat a pomegranate seed, knowing in his heart that if she did so she must return to him” (Hamilton 59). When Demeter does not have her daughter with her, she is upset and that’s when the crops get affected, they start to die as the soil is not fertile enough. When Persephone returns, the months that follow-up are spring and summer, the crops are growing again and there’s is no danger of people dying from starvation. These myths explained the origins of what was unknown to man just like it explained how they themselves were created along with the Earth they live

This relates to Pan’s Labyrinth because when Ofelia is accomplishing her second task. The faun tells her not to eat anything, however Ofelia disobeys causing her to almost not make it out alive, in which she would have never returned to her mother. It also shows how Ofelia choses between life and death.…

Greek Mythology Research Paper Greek Mythology is very important because it's a body of myths that belong to the Ancient Greeks. Mythology is based on the nature of the world, origins, and the significance of their Greek gods. The Greek God I chose to research about is Hermes because he is the God of Travel, and he was one of the main messengers during this time period. Hermes became the God of Travel because other Olympian Gods saw him as a person who could move swiftly between all the world’s of man and gods. Did you know that Hermes wasn’t just the God of Travel, he was also the God of Trade, luck, wealth, sleep, language, medicine and etc?…

Not only that, but the theme of healing is less about righteous justice against an uncaring spouse, and more of a loving mother who wants her daughter back, or “mourning as a tool for healing” as Madeline Nold puts it (Nold 171). In this story it’s Demeter’s refusal to keep the Earth’s balance that forces Hades to return Persephone: the world literally can’t be returned to normal until things are set right in the spiritual realm. The fact that there are two goddesses in this story, who can be read as the delicate and feminine versus strong, maternal and earthy aspects of Inanna, compound these comparisons. In short, the shamanistic connection between…

Demeter’s sacrifices as a parent shows not only how parents should be with their children, but also for children to realize the extent of their parent’s love. Demeter further exemplifies the love she has for her daughter by employing her self control and not letting temptations make her forget about Persephone’s abduction. Zeus “sent forth all the blessed and eternal gods besides: and they came, one after the other, and kept calling her and offering many very beautiful gifts and whatever right she might be pleased to choose among the deathless gods. Yet no one was able to persuade her mind and will” (HHD ll 326-330). Regardless of all the blessings and gifts Demeter could have received in place of her daughter, she decided against all of them.…

Normally people connect these words as if they are one in the same, however, this play demonstrates flaws of both meanings that in the end invoke strong emotion and a reality that life hangs in the balance between gift and curse. Since the early ages people have wanted an explanation on ‘why’ things happened. They never focused on ‘how’ they happened until centuries passed.…

Demeter, Persephone’s mother, wants her daughter back from the underworld, and because of that she comes in conflict with almost literally every Olympian god. After finding out that her daughter was given to Hades by Zeus, Demeter goes to live with the mortals for a while, then has a temple built for herself in Eleusis. She secludes herself in the temple, and, being the goddess of harvest and agriculture, makes it so that no seed grows for a whole year. The world is in famine, and Demeter “would have made away with humankind, and all the splendid things it gives and sacrifices to Olympus” (Unknown, Hymn to Demeter, 310-312), had Zeus not taken action to stop her. This shows how ruthless and amoral the Greeks perceived their gods to be, willing to wipe out mankind from the face of the earth over a dispute between themselves in which no mortals are involved.…
