Position power comes from the leadership position itself. One example of this is legitimate power. Leaders who use their legitimate power are in charge because they are in charge. Legitimate power derives from the position of authority that the leader is in (Northouse, 2015). Many people in modern organizations will take legitimate power at face value, but there are also some who will not. In many ways, this type of power is the least effective for managers. A good leader will not rely on the fact that they are ‘the boss’, and expect obedience and loyalty as a result. Jeff Weiner, the CEO of LinkedIn, tries to make sure that he arrives before the other employees and stops working after everyone else has left (Entrepreneur, 2013). By being the hardest working person in the company, the leader gains a great deal of respect, admiration, and expert power. Weiner also tries to constantly improve his performance, asking his team for constructive criticism, and providing his own in return (Entrepreneur, 2013).
