The higher education community is a community in which many can relate to; and it is one that is prevalent in the United States. The community of college students in modern day America are certainly a unique one. The community consists of several entities. These entities include instructors, educators, tutors, persons of power, and of course, the students themselves. Each of these subjects form what we know today as a place of higher education, or a college or university.
The community consists of millions of people. According to the website, National Center for Education Statistics, an estimated 20.2 million college students were predicted to attend American colleges and universities in the fall of 2015 (par. 11). Of those 20.2 million college students expected to attend in the fall of 2015, only 8.7 million are predicted to be male, whilst 11.5 million are predicted to be female (par. 12). Included in this community are an increasing number of blacks and Hispanics attending colleges and universities. Between the years 2000 and 2013, the percentage of African American college students rose from 11.7 to 14.7 percent. Also, the percentage of college students who were Hispanic rose from 9.9 to 15.8 percent. Also worth consideration, the percentage of Hispanics aged 18-24 enrolled in college rose from 21.7 percent in 2000 to 33.8 percent in the year 2013 (par. 16).
Contained within these statistics is the rise in the percentage of college students as an entirety. According…
