America was once a leading power in innovation around the world. However, in the last few decades, America has fallen behind compared to other countries in terms of education (U). To solve this growing problem, the great minds of America got together and created the Common Core. According to the common core website, hosted by the Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices:
“The Common Core is a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA). These learning goals outline what a student should know and be able to do at the end of each grade. The standards were created to ensure that all students graduate from high school with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in college, career, and life, regardless of where they live.”
Designed to put all students on equal footing, Common Core sets standards that every student must follow, regardless of intellectual ability or lack thereof. All students must conform to society’s standards in order to give every student an equal chance of making it at college. Common Core standards for English and Math are meant to prepare students for their entry into college and beyond. Common Core English calls on students to climb a steadily increasing hill of complexity of literature and to build an enriched vocabulary.
