Being different is a huge theme of the Fault in Our Stars, Hazel having a cannula and oxygen tank with her at all times really makes her stand out and is often asked about it by kids while adults avoid eye contact and walk swiftly away. Augustus has a prosthetic leg and while it is not noticeable it still causes a lot of discomfort for him. Augustus and Hazel have cancer and form a bond over a book called An Imperial Affliction, at one point Augustus asks Hazel whether she is, “one of those people who become their disease.” Hazel does not define herself by her disease and works to break down cancer stereotypes, not to the whole world but more around herself with her friends and family, both of them being different helps them …show more content…
Augustus is more concerned about leaving a legacy and being remembered in some way, while hazel is very concerned about how her imminent death will affect her parents and finds herself feeling guilty for what she has caused while out of her control and what she will eventually cause them to go through, Augustus and Hazels relationship greatly helps them face these problems and come to terms with their fears. Through it all a meaning becomes clear that life is defined by our relationships with others, and the importance and meaning of these relationships are demonstrated through the pain felt when a loved one
