In The Fault In Our Stars, Hazel had been talking about how much she missed Augustus, and she used this quote to describe it: “The waves tossing me against the rocks then pulling me back out to sea so they could launch me again into the jagged face of the cliff, leaving me floating faceup on the water, undrowned.” In this quote, the waves represented Augustus’ death. This lead me to think of the theme for this book: “Sometimes, there’s not going to be anybody to blame for the way you’re feeling,” I thought of this theme because although the death of Gus was hurting Hazel, Hazel still knew that he shouldn’t be to blame because there was nothing he could do about it. The Raft book showed the symbol of the waves, but they didn’t represent the same thing as the waves did in The Fault In Our Stars. In The Raft, the waves represented something that Robie was afraid of. The waves were something that was an enemy to Robie. “I put one foot over the side and into the water. And froze. There was no way. I could not get in that water.” Even though Robie was deathly afraid of the water, she ended up getting into it to empty more water from her raft. A theme that can be gathered from this was: “You can be afraid of something, as long as you face your fear and not hide in the dark.” I think Robie learned this when she realized that there was nothing she could do about the waves, so if she wanted to survive, she was going to have to face her
