When a child is exposed to domestic violence (DV) it can have numerous negative effects. Throughout this essay the term domestic violence will refer specifically to violence between adult intimate partners. This includes direct exposure to domestic violence or bearing witness to evidence of results of the violence, such as injuries and bruises. DV effects children in their daily lives and continues to affect them well into their adult lives. Children of DV are effected, emotionally, psychologically, behaviorally, including within their relationships. These effects are present throughout their childhood and long into the future. Exposure to domestic violence influences a child’s attitude towards the use of violence during their life. The impact of domestic violence on children is great. One of the main factors that are affected by DV is the act of parenting. According to Ah Yoo, “At least 1 in 4 women during their lifetime have been physically, emotionally, or sexually abused by an intimate partner” (as cited in Coker et al., 2002 and Straus and Gelles, 1986) “ and these women frequently suffer from mental health problems and parenting difficulties” (as cited in Campbell and Soeken, 1997 and O 'Keefe, 1994). The consequences of this abuse can cause severe psychological issues and parenting Struggles. These issues are are considered to directly affect children behavioral issues.
