In many recent years, one of the common topics of discussion is the drinking age. Some think the drinking age should be lowered, while a large handful of people think that the drinking age should remain the same. In this paper you will learn the pros and cons of lowering the drinking age. For every pro for lowering the drinking age, there is a con. “When the drinking age became eighteen, however, college drinking became legal and open” (Poe 17). When the drinking age was eighteen, nobody tried to hide it. However; the consequences were worse than ever. College students would start fires or even wreck their cars. On the contrary; When the drinking age is twenty one, college students have to hide what they’re doing because they are going to drink whether the legal age is twenty one or not. “It was tolerated so long as it stayed clear of the law and undercover, at least most of the time” (Poe 17). The main focus on who the drinking age effects are college students. “Although heavy drinking among older adolescents and young adults has declined over the past decades, no such declines have occurred among college students” (Weschsler 987). Many people believe that some kids go to college to drink and party, rather than get an education. There has been an enormous rise in the amount of underage drinking that goes on at college. “College students are more likely to engage in heavy drinking than their peers who do not attend college” (Weschler 987).
