Fielder's Contingency Theory Analysis

When being employed, more than likely one will have to interact with other individuals. In a perfect world, all that are involved in an organization would have ideal characteristics. If you were to rank co-workers on a scale, what factors do you think would be involved? Try to think of how results may be based off of leadership. Although Fielders’ LPC scale is subjective and characteristics are relative in contexts, the contingency theory is vastly well researched given the stated parameters which results in the effectiveness of leadership.

Fielder believed that there was a predetermined mechanism when came to leadership style that could be measured using a scale. The LPC (least-preferred co-worker) scale was created to start the thinking process of who you enjoyed working with the least. Once the above factors have been initiated, you then right how you feel about the individual or group of people based on the given variables. After adding up the scores, the outcome will determine what categories you fit in. Those who had higher scores tended to be relationship-oriented leaders. However, those with lower scores were categorized as task-oriented leaders. Those who were labeled as relationship-oriented leaders tend to be successful at making logical choices, have conflict control, and rapport with others. Due to research and studies, it is said that one doesn’t establish leadership solely on various attributes. However, the odds of an individual with specific qualities can be an influential leader compared to people who are less qualified. It’s vital to understand that different traits rely on certain situations. Aspects like sociability, dominance, motives, success, and power are all taken into consideration when using the model.
