The concept of project management has been around since the beginning of history. It has enabled leaders to plan bold and massive construction projects and manage funding, materials, labor and time, such as the Great Wall of China, the pyramids, and the Roman viaducts/aqueducts. Project management in its present form began to take root a few decades ago when industrial and business organizations began to understand the benefits of organizing work around projects.

Five individuals founded the Project Management Institute (PMI) in 1969 with the initial goal of establishing an organization where members could share their project management experiences and discuss issues. They define project management in simple terms as “the planning, executing, tracking, and leading of an endeavor through the use of experience and training in a proven framework.” The PMI has classified and grouped various types of processes associated with the project management discipline into ten categories in the Project Management Book of Knowledge Guide (PMBoK Guide). These categories are known as Project Management Knowledge Areas. The purpose of these Knowledge Areas is to better organize the different processes and bring the processes having common characteristics under one category.
