Corneal abrasions
One of the most common eye injury occurring while playing sport is the scratch of the cornea or corneal abrasion in medical term.This injury consist of the scratching of the cornea by the finger or the fingernail of a player.An abrasion can be small or large depending of the gravity of the scratching.This type of injury ensues when the corneal epithelium is abraded and it is more common in basketball (Brummit & Ericksson p.150) where the players in general without face protection are constantly jumping or defending on another player to get the ball.Along the same side a study from Zagellbum the national basketball association eye injury study reveal that during their study of 1092 nba players with ocular injuries that 50.9 % of those eye trauma are due of abrasions of the eyelid and 11.9 % of corneal abrasions(Zagelbum, P.1). The symptoms of corneal abrasions are immediate pain in the eye, watering of the eye and a sensation of intolerance to light that is photophobia (Catalano, p 201). If a corneal abrasion occurs while playing a game it is important that a specialist patch the the eye and most importantly instruct the victim to not rub the eye to not make it worst.The athlete should see an eye specialist for follow up.It is important to stress also that the cornea is like a barrier against bacteria consequently in order to treat any corneal abrasion it should be treated with antibiotics.Thus, a corneal abrasion is a small laceration of…
