Introducing Misty Copeland and Early Dance
On September 10th, 1982 in Kansas City, Missouri, a star was born. Only in this case no one believed in her or thought she was a star. Everyone had their mind made up about her; poor family, abused, homeless. Well they thought wrong. On this September day Misty Copeland came into the world, ready to dance and she did. No matter how many obstacles stood in her way she faced them. She grew up wanting to dance, and she did, but not with your regular ballet shoes. Misty made her own shoes due to the fact she could not afford her own. They were blue socks with cardboard glued to the bottom and old string she found lying around.
“Dancing starts to Suffer” Misty Copeland is one of seven children who grew up with four abusive step fathers and sleeping on the floor in dirty motel rooms. Her childhood was the beginning of a tough life. Ms Copeland at a young age could no longer live with her family due to, no place to sleep and not enough food. At age thirteen Ms. Copeland moved in with a dance teacher who she was taking lessons from at the time. At the time she lived with the dance teacher, she became a better dancer and focused on ballet. That wasn’t the only bad thing about going home, her mother wouldn’t take dance lessons due to the fact of what happened to herself as a child. Since she was not allowed to take dance lessons, she began to dance in front of her brothers and sisters to get practice. When she was 14 she took classes without her mother's approval. At age 15 her accomplishments expanded. She was the captain of her drill team and was the first place of the music center spotlight award.
