Misty was born in September of 1982 in Kansas City, Missouri. However, when Misty was just a toddler, her mother, Sylvia DelaCerna, took Copeland and her other three children to California. There her drill coach believed that she had a natural gift for dance and recommended she take ballet classes at the “Boys and Girls club.” It was there that she met Cynthia Bradley. Bradley taught classes one hour a week at the “Boys and Girls club” but also taught at and owned the San Pedro school of Ballet. Soon after Misty began taking classes at the club, Bradley decided to have Misty attend the ballet school instead. Bradley even invited Misty to live in her home in order for Misty to begin “intensive” training, which Misty’s mother allowed. However this later caused a dispute between Misty’s mother and Bradley, since Misty’s mother wanted what any parent could want for their child, for her to finish high school and earn her diploma. After legal disputes and a court case, 16 year old Misty returned home to the motel with her mother and siblings.
