At the beginning of The Cay, Phillip can be best described as confused when he wakes up on a raft with a black man named Timothy after the boat named S.S. Hato was torpedoed by a German U-Boat. After the crash Phillip is freaking out because he doesn't know where he or his mother is. Then, Philip becomes surprised and realizes that he was safe on the SS Hato and next thing you know he is knocked out and turns up on a raft with a big, black man. Towards the middle of the book, Philip can likely be defined as uncooperative when he is trying to make palm mats for the shelter and he can't do it, so he gets mad at Timothy and calls him an ugly black man when all Timothy was trying to do was help him.…

After a while, the narrator gives up, stating that cathedrals are not too important to him anyway. Robert had another idea in mind.…
