He realizes that people shouldn’t be judged by their skin color but by their actions that complete their character. Timothy helped Phillip numerously when he was blind because that was his kind character, he did not have to help the little blind boy, Phillip, when they were stranded together on the cay, but he did. Timothy did many things to help Phillip such as making Phillip a cane, training Phillip how to fish, and teaching Phillip how to weave a mat. After Phillip’s sight is fixed, he is required to wear glasses for the rest of his life.
After Phillip was rescued and brought off of the cay, he went through a multitude of surgeries. Though his surgeries restored most of his sight, Phillip was still required to wear glasses for the rest of his life. Phillip’s new glasses are a reminder that symbolize that the correct way of viewing a someone is by the content of their character, and not pre judging them by the color of their skin.
Through this novel, the author is able to communicate to the reader in a deeper level than he is able to do in any other way. The author touches the reader’s heart by making the characters someone they can relate too. The author, Theodore Taylor, dedicated to Dr. King and his dream because the book’s purpose is to show that people of all skin colors are the same
