At the beginning of the book ¨The Cay¨ phillip is happy. Philips mother wanted to leave the island where they were currently living. His father did not agree. Philip and his mother boarded a boat on sail to America. Shortly the boat was bombed. Philip could not find his mother. There was a buff black guy and Philip was on a raft with him. Philip was scared. Philip blames his mom for everything.He misses her, but he's mad at her. After being on the raft for a while philip is still sceptical about timothy. He doesn't know who he is or anything basically a stranger.
