So many people have argued the cause of the civil war, but Abraham Lincoln said himself in his second inaugural speech, “One eighth of the whole population were colored slaves. Not distributed generally over the Union, but localized in the Southern part of it. These slaves constituted a peculiar and powerful interest. All knew that this interest was, somehow, the cause of the war.” (1864) The main disputes over slavery were states’ rights, secession, and the election of 1860. All of these conflicts lead to the secession of the Southern states, which eventually led to the civil war. Slavery to the South was an economic necessity, while to the North is was morally against everything they believed in. (Tindall 2013) The two just needed to come together to figure out how to have both of the things they wanted.

All of the conflicts started with the election of 1860. The South was voting for the Whigs party. Over time, the Whigs political party was dying. Many of its followers joined with members of the American Party and others who opposed slavery to form a new political entity in the 1850s, the Republican Party. (HistoryNet) During the election, the Whigs got dismissed and the Democrats split. (The Historic Present 2008) The Republican party was then formed. Southerners feared if a Republican won, they would try to abolish slavery.
