Not only was this a bold move, but also then the confederates took fire on Fort Sumter shortly after. At this point it was confusing in how this much “controversy [could have] swirled” (pg.5) for the conflict to become to this extreme. It doesn’t seem as if it could all come from one cause, which is why he then goes into depth on his experiences and others to help the audience understand the arguments in what caused of the secession and war. Dew follows many secession commissioners their experience, primary documents and speeches to create the research provided in the book to conclude the many causes of the secession. Since the secession lead quickly to many other conflicts, there was sort a domino effect of conclusions in why the uprising and conflict began. This effect is why Dew was intrigued on the topic and then began to research and communicate with people involved more closely in the current events. He knew the people that he was communicated with during his research as the “Apostle’s of Disunion” because they were secession commissioners who were closely related to the seven Union states breaking off and creating the Confederate. Dews main focus was on letters and speeches that came from the slave states and their commissioners in attempt to start a new nation. He did this research to find depth in the argument of the cause of the civil war and that is exactly what he did by using many different people and their personal experiences during this time. When the South Carolina Convention happened and they passed their ordinance Charleston became a central factor of importance during this time. They created their own government and then had to become aware of state rights, economy, and other laws with their newfound government known as the Convention. This convention creation was made to be followed by others to eventually “dissolve the Union” politics were very involved in the turmoil between the North and South. With that being said, there were many events during this time so Dew tries to touch on the more important topics in detail to create proof of his argument in the book in that “slavery and race was the heart of the matter” (pg. 72). In conclusion, Dew uses his book as a way to instill his knowledge and research into others in a clear way to conclude why the Civil War
