The Benefits of Extracurricular Activities Extracurricular participation promotes motivation in students’ lives by helping them gain self-actualization by using the proper skills of discipline, determination, and respect to accomplish their goals. Extracurricular activities are considered voluntary afterschool programs such as athletics, fine arts, and educational clubs that provide experiences which are not taught in formal courses of study. Participating students’ learning goal is oriented in a positive manner by staying focused in school and gaining academic success not only in sports, but also in their grades. According to Natalie Fischer, participation in extracurricular activities promotes motivation in high school students and helps develop the “social, physical, and intellectual skills” needed in an individuals’ development throughout their lives (1788). Fischer’s research states that extracurricular participants’ attitudes are more “devoted to learning” than regular students due to the effects of social and intellectual skills that are valuable during their activities as well as in their lives(1789). Individuals who participate in activities tend to obtain “competencies,” such as teamwork, critical thinking, and a sense of commitment (1789). Students’ positive interactions with their environment will help them gain the satisfaction needed to succeed. The challenge of competing with other students in an activity will help stimulate their brains to the point where “quality criteria” results will be important in their assignments (1790).
