We are born, we live and we die. These are the basic phases of human life but there is much more to life than just these three basic ideas. Each individual goes through a continuous developmental process that helps shape us into a unique independent individual. Our personal experiences as children are what helps mature into proper adults. We learn reasoning along with social responsibility and as we move into adulthood, we learn to improve our sociocultural development. All these practices developed differently in each individual depending on their cultural upbringing as well as the influence parents have on the child’s upbringing. We can consider my upbringing as traditional in Hispanic culture. I was raised by a single parent and in a home that housed many of our extended family (i.e. uncles, aunts, and cousins). Back in the 80’s and early 90’s my neighborhood was middle class and as a child; this really did not mean anything to me. I believe that growing up surrounded by so much family helped me develop a great sense of social cognition at a young age. Having constant reassurance and support helped me grow up with a great sense of self-esteem. In addition, my language development was larger than many of my friends and neighbors. I enjoyed watching English programs like cartoons but in my home, my family spoke predominantly Spanish. I was a dual speaking child before I ever attended kindergarten.
