Essay About Obstacles In Life

Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. Although at times I have struggled to overcome these challenges, I have always persevered and pushed past each one with my determination to be the best I can be, which has matured me into the young adult I am today.
Through my youth, my parents worked relentlessly to provide my brothers and myself with a good Jewish education in a private institution. It came to a point where my dad had to travel out of state for business, a few weeks at a time, leaving my mom to run the household all by herself. I could see the effect all of the stress put on her, so I did what any other good, thoughtful son would do- I helped out. I committed myself to completing nightly chores around the house, such as doing laundry or cleaning dishes,

I have done my research and I know how arduous and extensive going down that path will be, especially since I am financially disadvantaged. However, I am willing to do what needs to be done in order to get to where I want to go. No matter the amount of work placed in my lap or the crazy schedule with zero hours of sleep, I know I have the power and will to accomplish my goals and make my dreams a reality. When I run into an obstacle, which is inevitable, I will not give up and turn around; rather like Michael Jordan said, I will find a way to maneuver around it and continue on my expedition. Not only will I sucker punch that challenge when I face it, but also I will come out victorious and will have acquired a new ability that will help my determination overcome the next

When I first started university, I had to go to an advising session; while, I do not remember what it was about, The one thing that managed to grab my attention was when the advisor said “I can spot a freshman a mile away” when someone asked her how, she replied” just search for people who look lost and confused”. It struck a chord deep within me because I was really lost and confused, not only that but also anxious, friendless, and afraid of all the responsibilities and of the possibility of failing. While my family assured me that these obstacles are the key element in becoming more responsible, and overcoming them will allow me to discover my strengths and weaknesses. I, on the other hand, felt like these obstacles were not character builders, but more like energy and time consumers that affected the academic performances and health of both my peers’ and myself. I strongly believe that fixing these problems should be one of the university’s priorities.…

Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…

Growing up an undocumented child was an adversity which taught me to diligent, but also fearful. Living in the "land of opportunity", I felt as if I were in a junction between prosperity or deportation. It wasn't until DACA, an executive order issued by President Obama that changed the lives of thousands of young immigrants. As a result of DACA, a spark was lit; I now had a future worth fighting for. After high school, I began to work full-time at my parent's restaurant, however, I didn't see this as the best use of my time and decided it was best to pursue a higher education.…

Our lives are filled with so much adversity, yet, I always felt fortunate for what I had. As my parents fled Afghanistan to escape the Soviet invasion, they dreamed of a home where their children could avoid the terror they endured. Growing up, I was reminded of how fortunate I am by the stories of political strife and harsh conditions those in Afghanistan still endure. It led me to question why I deserve to be in this position while others in the world suffer. I saw as my parents were assimilating into American culture the barriers to basic needs they had to overcome.…

Growing up with many obstacles have been difficult for me as it has been for my parents. Both my parents have immigrated to the U.S. at early ages to pick crops. Both of them, ironically, come from big families. Growing up, it has been difficult learning English as a second language because my parents were only Mixteco and Spanish speakers. As I got older I taught myself and tried extremely hard in school not to be a burden to my parents who were always worrying.…

Hard Work Pays Off It all begins when you step on your fears and defeat your obstacles. About four years ago, my family and I realized how difficult it was to get a valuable and affordable education and a better quality lifestyle in our home country of Mexico. Throughout my childhood, I only got to see my father for a few days every year during the holidays because he lived in the United States in order to make more money to send to Mexico. I am proud and thankful of my parents because they worked day and night to have enough money for us to eat and pay for our school needs.…

From a young age I can remember always wanting to help others understand. Understand me and understand the life that was happening around them. I had a somewhat nomadic childhood, meaning I never went to the same school or lived in the same country for more than three years at a time. As a result I have always been able to tell more than what is in front of me. I am good at reading people and getting to know them well, because my relationship building had always been so accelerated.…

Throughout my years, a barrier that was ever present in my life was the lack of an American citizenship. Society has engraved the idea that immigrants would not be able to graduate high school, let alone attend a prestigious university. Being a critical thinker and an analyst, I decided to take that as a personal goal and prove many wrong. What I began doing was seeking help from the sources available to me: counselors, teachers, and immigration lawyers. With the support from them, I was able to have the confidence in myself that is needed to achieve my success.…

How a person handles a adversity can either be a defining, or defeating moment. Adversity can be compared to hot water, how will you react in the hot waters of life? There are three options on how to handle trying situations; hard as an egg, soft like a carrot, or make a change in your situation, like coffee beans do in hot water. In my seventeen years of life, I have handle adversity hardly, softly, and effectively. I have handled adversity as an egg by becoming hard when hurt, a carrot by becoming soft regarding school, and flourishing as a coffee bean by making mature decisions.…
