Football was originally founded by Lamar Hunt on August 14, 1959. He was associated with the AFL, American Football League. The AFL had eight original teams, such as the Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Dallas Texans, Denver Broncos, Houston Oilers, Los Angeles Chargers, New York Titans, and the Oakland Raiders. Points were awarded by crossing the goal line with the ball. You could kick the ball in, run with the ball in your hand, or throw the ball across the goal line to another player. Rules were constantly changing to increase safety and avoid injuries. In the early 1880’s, eleven players were allowed to each team. The whole football field that they played on was one hundred yards. The system of downs was also added, but you only had three chances to make it all the way down the field. They played outside of college by the help of athletic clubs. The clubs went to look into colleges and find the best players to put on one of the original eight teams. At first, they were not getting paid at all. Jobs were found for the star players that made biggest impacts or biggest plays in the game. Either trophies or watches were given to that particular star player, which then became the whole teams and was pawned by the team. However, on November 12, 1892, there was evidence of money being given to play the game. The first professional football player, William “Pudge” Heffelfinger, was given five hundred dollars to play in a professional game, by the AAA (Allegheny Athletic Association).
