In 1946, the NFL did not renew Layden’s contract and replaced him with former co-owner of the Steelers Bert Bell. In 1950, the NFL replaced the Eastern and Western divisions with the National Football Conference and the American Football Conference. Then one year later the NFL started the pro bowl after it had been inactive for around nine years. In 1955, the overtime sudden death rule was used for the first time. Four years later, Lamar Hunt started intentions of creating a new football league and again it was called the American Football League.
