Counselling Assignment

Introduction For the purposes of this assignment, I wanted to interview an advisor and observe a session in an environment that I was not already familiar with. When offered the chance to learn more about the Kortschak Center For Learning and Creativity at USC and observe a session there, I thought this would be a great opportunity to expand my knowledge.
Advisor Interview
Title and Experience The advisor that I was fortunate to be able to interview was Natalie Luna, a second-year Educational Counseling student at USC. Since August 2015, she has also been an Academic Coach for the Kortschak Center. Additionally, she has experience with guidance counseling in high schools, as well as at the career center at USC. Aside from work experience,

In reflecting on the session, I noticed many characteristics of approaches to counseling and advising that we have learned so far in the Educational Counseling program. The first characteristic Natalie presented was the ability to relate to the client what her strengths were, therefore making use of strengths-based advising. As she mentioned in her interview, she believes that it is important to find her clients’ strengths in order to help them succeed. I saw Natalie specifically using the steps of strengths-based advising in that she had found what her student’s talents were, affirmed them, and envisioned the future with her client by planning specific goals for the week (Schreiner, 2013, p. 109-111). She related to the client that because she is such an independent learner, but is also not afraid to ask for help, that she would no doubt be able to accomplish the items on the list they made. Essentially, Natalie created goals that her client would be able to achieve because of her strengths in being an overall committed student. The client responded really well to this, and also seemed to feel empowered by the session and ready to get her work …show more content…
Possibly because of the positivity Natalie had with working with the student, along with taking a strengths-based approach and using empathy, the duo had a great working alliance. During their 35-minute session, they were able to go through all of her classes, write down what needed to be done, talk about how she is doing and also touch on her home life. What I saw happening was a direct representation of what Cormier, Nurius, and Osborn (2013) describe as “a sort of therapeutic collaboration and partnership in which counselor and client pull together in a joint venture…” (p.96). Essentially, the relationship between Natalie and her client allowed them to work efficiently through the student’s goals and also allowed them to build rapport by sharing personal

    Boundaries In Counseling

The questions Carol, Nellie, and Joseph asked each other are questions I would ask my colleges, peers, supervisors, and teachers to further my understanding. A lot of the situations seem to be the ones that are straightforward and almost too simple that it becomes difficult, but counseling, in general, is far more complicated and situational than most assume (2008). When the questions were asked, my answer to them was changed by the end of the discussion. It is interesting how much I still have to learn and think through…

QUESTION #1 1. Personally, I believe Melinda needs to breathe and think about everything carefully. Going to a peaceful location like the beach would be very good for her to clear and mind and figure out exactly what she would like to do. One personal characteristic of effective counselors that would be most helpful in this situation would be effective therapists make mistakes and are willing to admit them. They do not dismiss their errors lightly, yet they do not choose to dwell on them, either (Corey, 2013, p.20).…

Going into my second recorded counseling session I knew that my client was dealing with some obstacles from the week that really challenged her self-control. I was evident that she was angry and upset going into the counseling session, about an issue she had earlier in the week brought on by another student who threw food on her and made inappropriate and disrespectful remarks about my client and her family. J.L.E. expressed her anger and frustration for the situation, and instead of regressing to old habits of fighting, she walked away from the situation, and reported the situation to the administration. After the incident occurred J.L.E immediately came to my classroom, and explained what had happened, and I expressed how proud I was of…

The person that I interviewed for the FSHD 384 assignment is called Jessica Acosta; she works as an elementary school counselor. I decided that I wanted to interview a counselor that specializes in working with children because is a career that I am interested in working in the future. In order to interview a school counselor I went to the elementary school that is near the area I live in. After explaining to the lady at the front desk that this was for an assignment, she talked to the counselor and we scheduled an appointment for the interview. The reason why I wanted to interview this person is because in the future I would like to be a counselor myself, however I am still not sure which population I would serve once I get my Masters degree in counseling.…

For example, she helps students who have PTSD and have gotten triggered by certain topics in class, are suicidal, mentally ill or who have been affected by a sudden life tragedy. At the beginning of her career, her sessions with students were very formal as she tried to use the theories that she learned from her education, but soon enough she noticed that it was unrealistic to analyze every situation and to apply a specific psychological perspective. She currently relies on the ideas of motivational interviewing, DBT, solution-focused coping, rational emotive therapy (RET) and mindfulness. Most students improve in well-being once she helps them connect with resources and find social support. The biggest challenge is that she cannot stop students from relapsing into maladaptive coping strategies even after the original problem was resolved.…

In February of 2015, I was invited to a Super Bowl party at a friend’s house. I was hesitant to go, as I did not know many of the people who had been invited and I was just recovering from having strep throat. I decided last minute to attend the party, as I had been confined to my own house for a week due to being sick and wanted to get out of the house. While at the party, I sat next to a woman who happened to be working her first year as a school counselor. I had never thought about the school counseling profession prior to this conversation, and I was curious as to why she went into this field.…

What? I came into this course with very little background knowledge about health coaching and I was pleasantly surprised at how powerful this process can be. As a coach, I experienced success and setbacks throughout the process—both of which were crucial in learning to become a better health coach. From the beginning of the coaching process, my client and I achieved many successes. My client was motivated and willing to make a change, which is a major step in the coaching process.…

I agree with you that practicum is the beginning of a life of service that will benefit those who need help the most. Practicum is important because practicum is the first step to becoming a licensed counselor and the first step to living a life of service to others. The counseling practicum fosters the synthesis of academic learning with practical, hands-on experience. The practicum also provides the student with preparation for further training in professional counseling. Practicum is a time for application of the attitudes, learning, and skills that the student has acquired in his or her classroom experience.…

On Wednesday the 11th I was nervous about beginning my first day of field with my new field placement. This is that DSS is a place I am considering for employment as my first job after graduating with my BSW; therefore, I want to make a good impression while I am interning for the semester. When I walked in the door I met my new field supervisor, Vanessa Davis, as she explained who she was and her position within the agency. I was shocked when I walked through the door as Vanessa explained that we would be going out into the field in order to transport a client to the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program (SCAP) in order for them to complete a diagnosis of her circumstances. While on the way, Vanessa explained this was a program that partners with DSS in order to help teens learn independent living skills.…

This approach is interesting because it addresses the resiliency of the client and the client can build upon a strength-based foundation to work towards solutions (George, 2008). I feel that this approach can be applied in many different situations to build on the strengths and past successes than to correct the past failures or mistakes. Secondly, in this approach the therapist understands, accepts, and uses the client’s unique worldviews during the process of identifying and amplifying exceptions (George, 2008). Lastly, this approach uses the imagination of client to visualize the future through questioning that can allow for a clear picture of what the solution may look like even when the problem may not be clearly defined. I find one of my strengths through the use of the peer evaluation form shows that I have good techniques to ask the right questions to gain a better understanding of the problem the client is presenting.…
