Field Placement Narrative

On Wednesday the 11th I was nervous about beginning my first day of field with my new field placement. This is that DSS is a place I am considering for employment as my first job after graduating with my BSW; therefore, I want to make a good impression while I am interning for the semester. When I walked in the door I met my new field supervisor, Vanessa Davis, as she explained who she was and her position within the agency. I was shocked when I walked through the door as Vanessa explained that we would be going out into the field in order to transport a client to the South Carolina Youth Advocate Program (SCAP) in order for them to complete a diagnosis of her circumstances. While on the way, Vanessa explained this was a program that partners with DSS in order to help teens learn independent living skills. Completing this activity with …show more content…
I walked in the door and she informed me that she would be adding two clients to her caseload. In order to do so, she had to meet with coworkers who had already began working with the clients in order for them to explain the clients’ situations. Experiencing this action allowed me the opportunity to experience competency skill and strengthen my competency skill 3. This is that I was able to see how Vanessa effectively demonstrated oral and written communication with colleagues. Also by experiencing this action, I was able to recognize the importance of discussing client information when transferring caseloads. During the meeting Vanessa colleague shared information about a client that will be important during personal contact with the client. This information will help Vanessa and I work more effectively with the client, their family, and the community around them; providing them the best services possible. Overall, I really enjoyed my first week interning at DSS I was pleased when I walked into the agency and was able to witness the “social work life” right

In the memoir of Jeanette Walls’ “The Glass Castle”, there are many themes to explore. a. What effective communication styles and skills have you observed between social workers and clients? How can you learn these skills? I have observed effective communication between a social worker and a client each time I participate in a session with an experienced social worker. I have observed several communication skills on many different occasions including active listening, taking turns, using open ended questions, paraphrasing, and summarizing skills between social workers and clients to name just a few. While sitting in on sessions with my field instructor I often times find myself amazed at her ability to always say the right thing at the right time, to ask the best questions at the best time, and to lead a client to a targeted…

Recently, I had a learning experience from my internship that will help me even more in my pursuit in the field of social work. The day that this event occurred it helped me be able to be the teacher rather than the student to my intern advisors. Being that Voyage house is a support program for clients, we help to provide them with the necessities of food and household items from those that have no income. Therefore, we take them to Walmart and give them a budget that they are able to work with since they only need to provide resources just for them to living off. This was on a Friday where I had to miss group because I had something to do at school that morning; therefore, I just met my intern advisor later that day at Walmart.…
