In the 21st century, people from distant parts of the world and different communities can use technology to connect easily and do so frequently. Does this aid or threaten cultural diversity?
In this essay, I will be weighing up the positives and negatives of being connected to different communities due to today’s technology, and the effect this could have on the cultures of the world.
In today’s world, the internet is a widely used utility, with a wide variety of uses. One of the biggest affordances is that it lets us communicate with people from all around the world, people we would not normally be able to connect with. This can threaten cultural diversity, as the victim/s will be less likely to want to talk to people outside of their culture, in fear of being targeted again. Being connected with everyone also means we have more of an idea of what is going on in the world. This causes political implications, as certain cultures may not approve of the politics of other cultures. This can cause tension between those countries as people speak out on these social platforms to give their opinions, opinions that others may not agree …show more content…
This allows us to talk to people who speak a different language, and use this to understand their culture in more depth, instead of only knowing the trivialized things we have been taught. When we celebrate multiculturalism, we only celebrate the things that can be enjoyably consumed by a large group of people, ignoring anything that we do not, as a society, accept. Being able to talk to the people belonging to those cultures we “celebrate” allows us to become more cultural, and less ignorant. With many different people learning about each other’s cultures, we are all becoming more culturally diverse, by learning new things, and respecting the way each culture differs from our own, instead of disregarding the parts we don’t agree
