Technological developments and media are the key mover in history and social change. Technology in general are the sole or prime antecedent causes of changes in society and the fundamental condition underlying the pattern of social organization (Chandler). New technologies transform society at every level, including institutions, social interaction and individuals. At the least, a wide range of social and cultural phenomena are seen as shaped by technology and human factors ' and social arrangements are secondary (Chandler). The way we live is largely a function of the way we process information. The phonetic alphabet, the printing press and the telegraph were turning points because they changed the way people thought about themselves and their world (McLuhan).
The Internet and the World Wide Web have now created the “global village”, that Marshall McLuhan envisioned in the 60’s. Technology created a global “tribal echoland” of media resonance where people from nations all over the globe became our neighbours and we could listen in on their conversations (McLuhan). Social media networks, such as a Facebook and Twitter, give citizens a sounding board to be heard by the rest of the world. The chatter is often just noise, but when large groups of users join together for a common cause, it makes world news, even changing the world itself (Mason).
