Teamwork is very important within healthcare because everyone uses it. For example, when you walk into a doctor’s office for an appointment, you see a person checking you in. This person checking you in, most of the time, will put into the computer system that you are there. Team participation includes respecting the expertise and contributions of each team member. For example, in the NICU three nurses were trying to get an infant’s IV started. One nurse had tried on the wrists and inside of the elbows to start the IV. None of these worked. The nurse then said to one of the other nurses that she should try to start the IV into the foot. The nurse was talking to the other teammate because this nurse was good at putting in IV’s into the feet. The task of inserting the IV then was switched to the other nurse because she was better at inserting the IV in the feet. The other nurses, while inserting the IV, would help hold down the infant's hands and feet. Without their help, the IV would of been even harder to put in. These three nurses finally completed the task of inserting the IV by using teamwork and the expertise of the nurses. There are many examples of teamwork within healthcare. This is why it is so important to know how to effectively work in a team and as a team member. After all, everyday in healthcare, a worker will be working with a
