Throughout this assignment, I will be critically examining the teaching and learning of science throughout a series of lessons, based on materials, within a class of year one students. I will also be comparing the old and new national curriculum to identify the advantages and disadvantages for key changes which have taken place. As well as this, this essay will talk about the importance of science within the curriculum and how it is delivered in primary classrooms. Furthermore, I will be analysing the importance of teachers’ subject knowledge in Science and the way children learn by examining a range of theory and research findings. By using the lesson plans provided, it will also help to look at effective teaching strategies and the possible misconceptions experienced by children and teachers. Links will be made to relate to own practice and theory on the scientific aspect of materials. Finally, key conclusions and recommendations for further improvement within practice will be made.
According to Childs (2015), Science only became an acknowledged curriculum subject towards the end of the 19th century, following individual school initiatives, and was viewed as a subject which was usually associated for the higher class and more able children. However, it was not until after World War Two (1945) when major curriculum changes took place which made Science an important part of the curriculum for everyone (Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, 1953).
