My first memories of science lessons in elementary school are from kindergarten, when we made sock puppets filled with dirt and grass seed. The grass grew out of the top of the sock puppet, and created a sort of hair for it. I thought it was the greatest thing ever. When I got the chance to bring it home, I put it in the window in the kitchen, so everyone could see it. I was so proud of that thing. In first grade we raised butterfly eggs into larvae to a chrysalis, into full grown butterflies. As each butterfly hatched we would release them outside. At one of the elementary schools I went to, every student in third grade got to dissect a pig’s lung. I was so nervous when it came to my classes turn to do the lab, I almost …show more content…
Maybe part of my interest in going to science everyday was that I got to sit next to my best friend, but another part of it was that my teacher would write or draw a riddle on the board that we would have to solve as part of our “warm up” for the day. I was really good at them. And in that class, we were always doing different projects. I got to learn about my favorite subject as well as be creative about it. We had one project that we were instructed to create a model of an animal or plant cell. All we had to do was make sure that we had all of the correct labels of the parts of the cell, but how we created the model was up to us. I made a cake and frosted on the parts of the cell. I really loved that project, and I think that because I had so much fun with it I learned the different organelles much faster, and remembered them. In my first year at the middle school we got a grant to have a tank of salmon in our classroom. That year we got to take a field trip the fish hatchery outside Marquette to learn how they raised fish to release into the wild. For the salmon in our classroom we had to track the growth of the fish from eggs to full grown fish. Then we got to take a field trip to release the salmon. I thought it was so cool that we got to do that, because we were one of the two classes that got to be a part of releasing the …show more content…
Most days in my science class we spent either watching movies, or wasting time. Maybe others learn better by watching movies on different topics and taking notes, but for me, I just got bored and didn’t learn much. I don’t think that year was particularly helpful for my education. One day, our teacher ran in to class late to announce that we would be going on an adventure. We ended up pushing our teacher’s car to the auto shop down the road, because it had broken down that morning. Looking back at that year, I realize that I might not have learned as much as I should’ve. We did have some really great projects that I really enjoyed. We had this one assignment that we had to design a building that would withstand an earthquake. We learned how to write grant proposals to gain supplies we need to create our buildings. After we had completed our projects we tested how they would hold up in an earthquake. My building didn’t hold up too well, but that was one part of the year that I actually did learn
