Sleeping Freshmen Never Lie, by David Lubar is a humorous book about a teenage boy named Scott Hudson who is entering high school. Scott is the youngest son in the Hudson family. The genre of this book is young adult fiction. The time period that the story takes place appears to be recent but we don’t know for sure. During this book Scott Hudson faces the same things that any teenager would face during any time period .
On the first day of school Scott was smacked on the head while riding the bus. Scott knew that if Vernon was on the bus with him he wouldn't get smacked. Scott was friends with Julia in grade school and they are not anymore because they did not talk anymore. It also changed because at the beginning of high school he was friends with Kyle, Mitch, and Patrick. After Mitch got a girlfriend and started to not hang around with them anymore. Kyle started to get into wrestling and had a lot of meets. Then Patrick moved away so he was also not in the group anymore. The same thing happened to Scott, and he tried new things. Some of the things that Scott did was to write for the sports team and to try out for student council. Scott found out that he was really good at writing for the sports team. He also learned in class that he was good at the Tom Swifties. Also, he ended up winning the student council election. This is a great thing that he went through because he tried these things to be with Julia, and he found out about himself in the process.
Scott also started to become more independent and to think for himself. For example scott went to the hospital after Louden attempted to hang himself. Scott didn't have to do this and he didn't have any guidance when making that decision. When Scott’s brother wanted to go to Nashville Scott was there to support him to go because he knew it was a good idea.
Scott learns about facing consequences in this book. The first time he faces consequences is when he talks to Julia and gets beat up by Vernon. He gets beat up by Vernon because he beat up Kyle, and Kyle got him back by telling Vernon that Scott liked Julia. Also Wesley took Scott to the coffee shop one morning and Scott was late to school then he got a detention. Scott wrote small letters to his brother that is not born yet so that his brother wouldn’t make the same mistakes he did in high
