Summary Of Pros And Cons Of A Flat Tax

Improved Essays
For some people it may seem unfair that wealthy people get taxed more. I'm certain that this would be only coming from the wealthy. Peoples struggles are real in America and the last thing that should be implemented is taking more from the poor and give to the rich. I know that the rich have million dollar homes and fancy cars to worry about, and the middle income and low income have worries of how to food will be put on the table or can rent be paid. Collette L. Meehan writes an article in the Houston Chronicle "Pros and Cons of a Flat Tax". In her article a pro for flat tax is that people think we should have a flat tax because it's easier, and it doesn't discriminate. Again the only people that agree with this I'm sure is the wealthy.

The 1 percent of the population that already controls 40 percent of the wealth continues to get richer but the poor is still being asked to pay more in taxes. While this is happening the mighty 1 percent continues to receive tax breaks to protect their fortunes.…

In the article “Stop Coddling the Super-Rich” Warren Buffet elucidates to the fact that the super-rich are not being taxed nearly enough as they need or should be. Buffet explains that government leaders have requested, even solicited shared sacrifice; however, they spared the mega rich. (227) He further states that the legislature sheltered the rich as if they are some kind of endangered species. (227) Warren indicates that he would leave rates for 99.7% of taxpayers unchanged, as well as continue the current 2-percentage-point reduction in the employee contribution to their payroll tax. This would help the poor and the middle class, who need every break they can get.…

The poor are not in a position to pay more taxes. One of the biggest reasons the deficit is so high is due to programs for the poor and retired. A lot of tax dollars are paid and used to benefit those programs. If we make the poor pay more it may not help. More tax dollars would just be spent on food stamps and such.…

For example, Harvard is given millions of dollars because it is an IVY League School but public colleges like CUNY are given less which means CUNY is underfunded and causes students to pay more out of their pockets. I am sure that with all of the funding IVY League colleges receive, they do not need money from students to educate them. Overall, I do not think it is fair that the 1% get out of paying taxes and I believe that they should be taxed more because even though they are donating, they aren’t all doing it for good reasons. It is true what they say, money does run the world. And the more you have of it, the more power you have within a…

The middle-class people will have to pay more through a flat tax. But, what many people do not know is that under several flat tax proposals, “individuals and families would receive personal allowances – a set amount of income that is tax-exempt – that would limit their taxable income. This would allow the lowest-income brackets to be completely or nearly exempt from income taxes”…

I am writing to you to express my concerns about current tax laws. I believe the current system is flawed, and tax reform is necessary. Recently, news outlets have disclosed that Apple has held an estimated $181.1 billion in offshore accounts. Apple would owe an estimated $59 billion in U.S. taxes if its profits were held in the U.S. One of the consequences of what Apple and many other corporations are doing is depriving our government of necessary funds to be used to promote the general welfare. Tax reform is necessary to provide incentives to Apple and many other corporations to bring its profits to the U.S. Tax reform is also necessary to promote simplicity, efficiency, and equity.…

I don’t believe that people making more money should pay more tax than others. I think that the tax rate should be equal for everyone. People who are making more money is because either they are working very hard, or they are smart and have more knowledge than others. If rich people want to donate money for a good cause, then it’s their choice. I know that there are some people who will say that these rich people get their money because we buy what they are selling, so they should pay more taxes since they are making more money so the government can use it to support people who are making less money, for military, etc.…

Since 1993 to today the current tax on gasoline is 18.4 cents per gallon, and in the span of almost 25 years our roads, bridges and other infrastructures has not been maintained and are in need of desperate repair. The tax has remained low and the cost to make these repairs continue to rise. If Congress would raise the tax on gasoline to 40 cents per gallon that would increase the national…

Rather, the entire system that governs how we pay our taxes must be completely revised to be fair to all Americans, no matter their backgrounds or their…

Although each person has the right to make as much money as possible, in the United States the government should however keep the income rise proportioned by taxing the wealthy more and the poor less. In recent years the opposite happened where the taxes on the wealthy were cut from a top rate of 68% in 1980s to 28.5% by 1988. The share of federal tax revenue paid by corporations has dropped from 33 cents of every dollar collected in 1953 to less than 10 cents today. There are those who inherit the money, and those who have worked hard and strived to be a successful person. Therefore, to answer the question previously stated, higher tax rates should not pertain to the ones who made sacrifices to become wealthy.…
