The affluent shouldn’t have to pay more just because we think it may solve the deficit problem, it won’t. Sivy even stated, “Raising taxes on the affluent only reduces the deficit by 10%.” Proving the point that, even if the wealthy were to pay more they still wouldn’t decrease the deficit by much compared to if everyone just paid an equal sufficient amount of taxes. Sivy also stated “Letting the Bush tax cuts expire for the middle class slashes the deficit by 35% or more.” If the rich and the middle class paid more, that could raise enough money in taxes to reduce the deficit to almost half of the debt the U.S is currently in. …show more content…
The poor are not in a position to pay more taxes. One of the biggest reasons the deficit is so high is due to programs for the poor and retired. A lot of tax dollars are paid and used to benefit those programs. If we make the poor pay more it may not help. More tax dollars would just be spent on food stamps and such. Sivy says, “While a big group of Americans pay no income tax, they aren’t getting away with anything - they’re either retired or relatively poor.” This proves the fact that the poor are not in a position to pay more
