An example of ethos can be found in the beginning of the fourth paragraph, where the speaker gives himself some credibility by claiming to have been considering the issues for many years. The examples of ethos in this work are not particularly strong, as it is not the speaker's primary appeal. Pathos can be found in the opening paragraph with the speaker's descriptions intended to invoke emotion, such as "melancholy object" and the description of the efforts of the mothers. Like ethos, pathos is not the primary appeal. Instead the primary appeal is logos, or reasoning.…

Ethos, pathos, and logos work together extremely well to create excellent writing. Ethos gives the reader a good reason to read a piece of writing. If something doesn’t have ethos there is nearly no point in reading the piece of writing because it has no credibility. Pathos makes the reader feel the message of the piece of writing. It gives the reader something to feel and connect with.…

Companions are the people that can help the hero through various tasks such as fighting in battle, learning a lesson, or achieving a particular goal during the journey. The companions, like the supernatural aid and talisman, are helpful to the hero in assisting the hero in accomplishing his goals and therefore having his journey be successful. With this in mind, the companions of Billy Jack are the school students, Jean who provides him with advice, Cole who supported Jean and protected the school, Barbara, the Doctor who supported the Indian people and defended them, as well as Martin. Another example is the doctors in the short story that helped the parents battle Mr.Grief through helping their child maintain stability.…

Rhetorical modes are a way or a method of presenting an argument through writing or speech. In making arguments, there are three major rhetorical modes, as outlined by Aristotle: Ethos, Pathos, and Logos. Ethos is an appeal to ethics and a way of showing the author or speaker’s credibility, Pathos is the appeal to the reader or listener’s emotions, and Logos is the use of logic and reasoning. In “The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano,” Equiano, who is the main character and author, uses these three modes to argue that slavery and the slave trade should be eliminated. He demonstrates Ethos by explaining his personal beliefs as a Christian and his personal experience as a slave .…

In Mexico during the early 1980’s, a group of young siblings living in poverty tell an important story of the immigrant experience and the drives behind migration. Reyna Grande’s, The Distance Between Us, is a memoir written with the recurring appeal to the reader’s pathos. Grande uses the rhetorical strategy to keep the reader’s interest and to help them make personal connections to the story. Grande’s use of pathos helps to show not only the importance of understanding the immigrant experience, but also the importance of following your dreams. For example, the first chapters of the memoir are predominately about Grande and her siblings’ experience living with their Abuelita Evila in Mexico.…

Such breakthrough caused an outburst in scientific development and the release of ways to cure millions of diseases, including, but not limited to, polio, cancer, leukemia, and hemophilia. Following this further, Rebecca Skloot is able to describe the person behind the HeLa cells and the interminable process that she had to go through in order to attain enough information to write about Henrietta Lacks and her immortal cells. Bleh, locking down a clear understanding of ethos, pathos, and logos took a significant amount of time and research. Being able to apply this concept to a paper I found to be even more difficult especially in clarifying ethos and logos. In my mind, I over simplified the two concepts to ethos equaling credibility and logos to mean the accuracy of the information, but in my research, this was not always the case. In a basic Google search of rhetoric and web design, many sources stated that logos was the layout and ease of use of a website. The ethos, on the other hand, was how "professional" the website looked.…
