Imagine being sent to a combat zone, being placed on the front lines of one of these areas. It’s still dark out but you know the sun can’t be far from rising. A fellow comrade comes running into your tent and informs you that enemies have been seen hiding behind the nearby hills. Standing in the front of the tent, eyes wide, your comrade is waiting for your command for what the troop should do. What I’ve just described is a situation that isn’t uncommon while being a commander in a combat zone. It’s not all about the physical aspect, a leader in this zone needs to have the mental ability to critically think and make the correct decision quickly. Using the glass ceiling in this argument would insinuate that the military is keeping women from these top officer positions because of gender discrimination, when in fact it’s just the military trying to keep underqualified personnel out of these positions. Multiple times McGregor writes about how women are limited to the promotions they can receive in the military; for example she mentions that “the remaining restrictions hurt women’s opportunities for advancement” (McGregor, Military Women in Combat). Although these statements are true, the lack of promotions and the “glass ceiling” that may be stopping them, isn't what the question of having women in leading roles in combat zones is about. If women and men will be held to the same physical and mental standards, and a women meets these standards, there is no reason why they should be held back from being a top officer. Therefore these positions should be open to both men and women but under the obvious circumstances that both genders are held to the same qualification standards. These women are going to have to prove to themselves and their fellow colleagues in these combat zones that they deserve to be there. They will have to earn their spot as a top officer just as any male would have
