The author, Lauren F. Serrano, believes women should not serve in the U.S Infantry. Serrano’s article, “Why Women Do Not Belong in the U.S. Infantry”, provides arguments supporting her main points. The main points Serrano includes; why the U.S. is not in need for women on the frontlines, the infantry brotherhood, and sexual assault cases. Serrano served as a Marine Officer and contributes her personal experiences from her service. Although Serrano agrees women are capable to serve in the military, she stresses the infantry is not the main job females should focus on.…
Women deserve more respect. For quite some time now, women have been participating in the military, which, of course, originally only allowed men. Throughout the years of their participation, women have demonstrated that they are just as competent as their male counterparts. Last year was a particularly significant year for female soldiers as they were finally allowed to move into battalions that were formerly all male. Jena McGregor, a writer for the Washington Post, wrote her thoughts on this historical achievement for women in her piece “Military Women in Combat: Why making it Official Matters.”…
In the military, women were originally not allowed to have combat positions, but now they are allowed to be in every one of them. Ashton Carter said, “To succeed in our mission of national defence, we cannot…
The women who argue to be able to serve in combat are not acknowledging the danger it puts themselves and the United States Military in. In the article,“Why Women Do Not Belong in the U.S Infantry.”, Serrano expresses that if they allowed women to serve in combat during her service in the military, anyone including herself would have jumped at the opportunity because of the novelty, excitement, and challenge; but, her views have changed with the experience and knowledge she has gained. Everyone needs to accept the fact that women are different, not only physically, but all around. It will only destroy the mission of the services (Para. 1). Also, allowing women to serve in infantry will cause enormous amounts of distractions.…
Patty Blount, a born author, once said “Some boys go too far. Some boys will break your heart, but one can mend it”. The novel,“Some Boys” is a story written by Patty Blount. It manifests the importance of respect and love and the power to stand firm for yourself, as it follows the lives of two young high school teenagers, Grace Collier often nicknamed a slut, whore or liar and Ian Russell known as the healer and the protector. Back then, Grace Collier was the girl that everyone would stare at.…
World War II was a difficult time for everyone, not just for the people who were personally involved as well as the people who just had the luxury of living during that time. Susan Griffin’s essay “Our Secret” takes mainly about the war and how it had to capacity to influence people even to this day. She talks about herself and how it influenced her own childhood, but also uses an out of this era example. She uses Mr. Heinrich Himmler as an example of how one person had the ability to affect multiple. She humanizes him so we as readers believe what he did wasn’t his fault but the fault of an explosive aftermath.…
Women in combat. It has recently sparked a debate on whether women should be allowed in combat or not. In my opinion, women shouldn’t be allowed in combat because they are too emotional to handle the long periods of time of being on tour, they aren’t physically built like men, and there would be too many problems with having men and women living together. Women are way too emotional to withstand being in combat. They wouldn’t be able to handle the 100+ degree temperatures, the stress of being away from their families for long periods of time, and they wouldn’t be able to handle being shot at all the time.…
Jena McGregor a writer for the Washington Post wrote an article “Military Women in Combat: Why Making it Official Matters” argues that women should be allowed in combat and should be treated equally as men. If women have the right to vote then why shouldn’t they be able to do what men can do, especially when your giving your life in combat. When signing up for the military women know what they are getting themselves into including giving their life for…
Regardless of women’s various yet limited, past positions in armies, the role of women in the military, especially in combat, has become very controversial and only recently have women started to be given a more prominent role in contemporary armed forces. As increasing numbers of countries begin to expand the role of women in their militaries, the debate continues. Women have proven successful in the past for fighting in the military, and they will continue to prove themselves capable of serving our country.…
In the passage “Policy: Women in combat” the author talks about reasons why women can not and should not be in combat positions. However, in the lines of these two things seemed to be blurred rather than concrete. The passage gave an example of articles that emphasize this belief. They gave the article that former senator of virginia wrote which was a clear outline of common reasons as to why women should not be in combat. Some of the reasons he listed is as follows: that the fact women can get pregnant is seen as a weakness, that physically and emotionally they are not strong enough, and finally that they would distract the soldiers from the task at hand.…
The Street, written by Ann Petry, is a novel that explores the way of life for both Caucasian and African Americans during the 1940’s and provides valuable insight to the problems that plagued both races during this turbulent time in history. The Street uses money as a motif that demonstrates a proverbial wall between Caucasians and African Americans during the 1940s. Ann Petry, according to her biography written by Marilyn Mobley McKenzie, experienced a dual world of African Americans and Caucasian while growing up. McKenzie writes that Petry had, “the perspective of her own black middle-class upbringing in a small, predominantly white New England community and the perspective of her years living and working among the black poor of New York City. The weight of her observations from the second perspective prompted her to write The Street” (McKenzie 615).…
Recently I read an editorial published on September 16th, 2015 in The New American, in which, the author argues that women can and should serve in the military, but not in combatant positions (McManus). Warfare and military are not simple problems. Numerous lives are at stake and spending has ripple effects throughout our economy. Personally, my brother is in the United States Air Force and I really wish he were not. As an electrical engineer he would be paid more out in the civilian world, and, more than that, he does not need a guilty conscience for an organization…
Women in Combat In the United States, equality is strived for, but what happens when equality becomes more of a political standard that bleeds into the aspect of American society that is rightfully separated from their civilian counterparts for the greater good? What might be right for the American civilian may be devastating for the American warfighter. For instance, it is debated that women shouldn’t be present in combat. For women outside the military, it was acclaimed as a step toward true equality.…
Over time, women have struggled to free themselves of systematic oppression that prevents them from achieving and succeeding in society. In the poem “It’s a Woman’s World”, Eavan Boland is an examination on the status of women in society. The title, which is an allusion to the James Brown song “It’s a Man’s World”, suggests that Boland believes that women are superior to men regarding status in society. However, the content of the poem promptly proceeds to contradict the title. Throughout Boland’s poem, the speaker reveals that in a “woman’s world”, women are overlooked and their status remains unchanged in the community.…
This article expresses the supporting and opposing views of women in Combat. Supporters say that women are fully capable of being in combat, while the opposition is women in combat is less effective to the military because they are not as physically capable. This is overall a good source to use in the introduction because it gives both view points and basic information to set the argument. “Women in the Military Follow-Up: Pentagon Lifts Restrictions on Women in Combat.” Issues& Controversies.…
