Child labor is a big problem. “In 1900, 18 percent of all American workers were under the age of 16.” (History.com Staff). That is high percentage considering that only included kids under 16. 59 percent of hazardous work done by children is in agriculture, according to Kelsey Nowakawski in the article “Children At Work”. In the 1880’s states placed restrictions on the use of child labor, according to the book “Child Labor”. The restrictions helped reduce the number of kids working. According to the book “Child Labor”, in 1990 an estimated 2 million children were still working in an industrial setting. So that proves that placing restrictions/laws will help reduce the number of kids working. “Which take us back to Kalpona at the moment when the factory erupted into flames. There had never been a fire drill at the factory. The only exit door on the floor was locked so that workers could not leave during the day, and piles of cardboard board boxes blocked the path to that door.” (Lewis and Sikes). Many kids and adults were killed that day because they were working in an unsafe building. In order to fix that, elected officials should check in on factories to make sure the working conditions are safe. According to Kristin Lewis and Gini Sikes in the article “Why Are Your Clothes So Cheap?”, in parts of China minimum wage is $2.15 an hour and in Bangladesh it’s only 50 cents.
