Some people believe that the Industrial Revolution was a positive change in that lifetime; while they are not wrong, they are not entirely right either. The Industrial Revolution had its ups and downs. But the downs of the revolution caught many people’s attention. Yes, the Revolution gave people new jobs, new ways of keeping them safe and brought growth to cities. Long working hours, the child labor issue, and the lack of education were a few of the negatives, yet where the profound realities of the Industrial Revolution.

Children as young as six years old worked in the factories. But in order for the family to keep their home or at the least food on the table, they had to use every resource available. When a child was asked how young she was when she started working, she replied saying “I was about thirteen years old when I began coming” (document7). Child labor was also very dangerous. Kids would have to stand on milk crates and stay balanced on them while they worked the fast moving rubber band that was very much so able to kill them with one wrong move. And the deformities that they later gained such as “weak ankles and crooked knees” (document 7). Some families were able to make bad situations better, but in most cases life was just too hard to keep up. Many may argue about how hard the lives of the poor were, but in all honesty it’s a real mystery to those in that particular position because they didn’t realize how down and out they really were. When the labor unions came into play it as both a joyous day and a hard coming day. The good part was the kids weren’t working in dangerous places or for very long, but this also meant that the parents had one less helping hand on putting food on the table or paying bills.
