The Role of Slavery in Modern Economy In the world there are an estimated 215 million child laborers aged between 5 and 17 years old. Around 115 million children work in the worst forms of child labor. Some types of work make useful, positive contributions to a child’s development, however there are other forms of slavery too. Of the children in child labor, some 115 million are engaged in dangerous work, otherwise known as the works forms of child labor. This is work that threatens children’s health and development, for example exposure to dangerous machinery or toxic substances and may endanger their lives The worst forms of child labor also include the 8.4 million children in slavery and slavery-like practices, who are also subject to exploitation by others. The practice of slavery still continues today in one form or another in every country in the world. From women forced into prostitution, children and adults forced to work in agriculture, domestic work, or factories and sweatshops producing goods for global supply chains, entire families forced to work for nothing to pay off generational debts; or girls forced to marry older men, the illegal practice still happens around the world. Equiano was kidnapped at age 11 along with his sister. Several days later Equiano and his sister were separated. Equiano continued to travel farther and farther away from home. The Middle Passage for Equiano was a long journey. Equiano talked about how the slaves were treated and how they were chained together down in the bottom of the boat and the living conditions were terrible, the smell was disgusting and it was dark and crammed. There were sounds of people screaming due to the whippings the slave received. When Equiano arrived in Barbados no one had purchased him so he was shipped off to Virginia where he was purchased and put to
